Happy Dhanteras 2016: One of the most important festivals of Hindu, Dhanteras is being celebrated as the first day of Diwali. This day is also known as Dhantrayodashi which is going high all over the country. While in Nepal, this is the beginning of Tihar festival. The word Dhanteras has combined the meaning of two words, Dhan which means wealth and teras can be defined as the thirteenth day of the moon cycle.

In 2016, Dhanteras falls on October 28, the festival of wealth. Goddess Lakshmi and God Yama are worshiped on this day. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth while Yama is the god of death. According to the Hindu mythology, this day is the occasion for the purchasing of precious metals such as gold and silver. This will bring good luck, wealth and success in business.

However, people also buy new utensils in additions to metals. The entrance of houses and workplace are decorated with beautiful and colorful rangoli designs for welcoming goddess, Lakshmi. The rangoli making including ingredient having vermillion powder and rice flour.

The different regions of the country have different rituals for the celebration of the festival. The farmers in rural worships their cattle which is the main source of wealth. In South India, cow the personification of goddess Lakshmi is worshiped. People of Maharashtra offer each other the traditional sweet of Naivedya which is prepared by using lightly pounding dry coriander seeds with jaggery.

The evening is the common timings for the devotees to do the Lakshmi puja. This puja includes Diyas, singing devotional songs to take off the devils from the house. The puja is done using seven cereals of wheat, urad dal, moong dal, gram, barley, and masoor dal. Some other tradition is known as Yamadeepdan in which people worships Lord Yama and the whole includes the lighting of lamps. The Muhurat timings for the Lakshmi Puja is as follows:

Dhanteras Puja Muhurat: 5:35 pm – 6:20 pm
Pradosh Kaal: 5:35 pm – 8:21 pm

Trayodashi Tithi starts = 4:15 pm on October 27
Trayodashi Tithi ends = 6:20 pm on October 28

The advisory timings for Lakshmi Puja are during Pradosh Kaal which is equivalent to 2 hours and 24 minutes after sunset.
